This study looks at an HR SaaS comparison page I focused on over ~2 years.

The goal was to increase the page's organic visibility and traffic, ultimately bringing in more revenue through PPC used on the page.

The links were built gradually throughout the period rather than through short bursts of activity from relevant and quality SaaS domains.

Results: Where it Began

The page initially had:

9 referring domains
~650 organic traffic

It had a clear opportunity to improve its visibility in search and grow the traffic to and clicks from the page.

The Approach

We approached it by not just getting as many links as possible but to build them consistently over time with high relevancy and authority, with the aim of developing the page's link profile gradually.

Over the course of ~2 years, ~70 links were built.

The placements primarily came from:

  • Blogs on SaaS provider websites

  • Software comparison websites

  • Other relevant websites within the SaaS space

  • Locations where a link to the comparison page made sense within the surrounding content.

The Results

There was a significant change in the page's performance:

Patience is Needed

The graph shows that the improvement wasn't linear, with periods of nice growth, some where nothing happened, and some dips.

Deciding to build links won't fix things straight away, traffic won't increase immediately after every new placement. Search rankings take time to respond, and other factors can affect how a page performs throughout the process.

Maintaining a consistent and persistent approach rather than expecting every month to produce a new record was key.

Why I Think the Approach Worked

Building ~70 links over two years isn't an enormous volume when compared with other campaigns I've worked on. Some have ended up with 200+ links.

Where those links came from and how consistently they were built is what mattered.

The links were relevant to the SaaS space and acquired from real domains rather than using large bursts of low-quality links. We developed the pages link profile gradually while continuing to compete for relevant search terms.

The Takeaway

Essentially, you don't need an insane number of links but do need the right ones consistently built. How many you can build and how often comes down to your budget.

Link building can't be viewed as a numbers game anymore, those days are way behind us.

A relevant link from the right website can be considerably more useful than simply adding another link to a spreadsheet.

There's unfortunately no guarantee that building links will produce an immediate increase in traffic or rankings, but building relevant links over a long enough period can make a meaningful difference.
